It’s a typical cold and dark December evening. I decided to give my weekly football game a miss (those close to me will confirm this rarely happens) to attend the annual Christmas lunch with my close friends. Arriving home, I take a call that demands me to immediately make my way to the football pitch. The next few hours (come to think of it, next few months) become my darkest yet. Genetics had struck again. This time my protector, my friend, my brother had suffered a heart attack and despite the valiant efforts of doctors and nurses, I find myself in Déjà Vu.
I could not help but think that my genes were a death sentence. I needed to shift the blame from any future problems by taking responsibility for the elements within my control. I decided to set a long term goal. With a commitment to continually make incremental self-improvements. “Kaizen”.
Long Term Goal – “Take proactive and preventative measures to live longer than my brother and father”
The next six years are spent balancing all my responsibilities. I continue to climb the heady heights of the corporate ladder receiving awards and accolades for my achievements. I remain laser focused on the long-term goal: I document, commit and achieve a series of SMART goals for my personal and professional wellbeing.
